SUBJECT
Interior Lamps "Soft ON/OFF" Inoperative

MODEL
E83 (X3) with the ambient light package (option 563)

Vehicles produced June 5, 2008 to August 31, 2008

SITUATION
The interior lighting, including footwell lighting, exit lighting and entrance lighting, is immediately switched on/off. The "soft on/off" function that uses a dimming feature is inoperative.

CAUSE
Software error in the General Module; as a result, the feature was deactivated during series production.

CORRECTION
In the case of a customer complaint, do not replace any parts. Also, do not switch on the "soft on/off" feature using Car and Key Memory, as this may lead to the damage of other system components.

An updated General Module is expected September 2008 that rectifies the software error.
