Creaking Noise from the C-Pillar Area
MODEL
E91 (3 Series Sports Wagon) produced up to 4/2007
SITUATION
A creaking or grating noise may be heard from the rear of the car, near the C-Pillar or roller cover, while driving over poor road surfaces.
CAUSE
Relative motion between interior trim adjacent to the C-Pillar and the body shell, when the vehicle is subject to torsional loads.
CORRECTION
Install felt tape to specific locations on the trim.
From 4/2007 the design of the trim has been changed to prevent these noises.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the safety belt trim cover from the affected side per repair instruction RA 51 47 157.
2. Remove any existing felt on the 2 tabs (1) which contact the C-Pillar.
3. Cut 2 felt strips 10mmX40mm from the felt pad (PN 65 77 1 377 052) and secure them to the 2 tabs (1) on the trim. These felt strips should wrap around both sides of each tab
4. Remove the rear quarter glass vent trim from the affected side per repair instruction RA 51 47 156.
5. Cut 2 felt strips 1 0mmX30mm from the felt pad (PN 65 77 1 377 052) and secure them to the 2 outer tabs (1) on the quarter glass vent trim. These strips should wrap around the end of each tab.
6. Reassemble the trim and ensure the noise has been eliminated.
