54 34 ... Checks of Soft Top Linkage Before Installing Soft Top Cover

54 34 ...Checks Of Soft Top Linkage Before Installing Soft Top Cover

Necessary preliminary work:
- Soft top cover has been removed

NOTE: Figures partially show soft top linkage with soft top cover.

WARNING:
- Soft top becomes pressureless without a warning signal.
- For all repair work, secure soft top with a suitable aid against collapsing.
- Ensure that the support is centred and broad.
- Ignition must remain switched off during the repair work.
- Failure to comply with this instruction may result in the hydraulic valves incurring preliminary damage.

Measure 1:

Identifying feature:

A possible complaint is in the form of a mark on the soft top cover.

Measure against sporadic pinching of soft top cover: Repair kit: 54 34 7 190 757.

Remedy:

Replace installed limit positions with constructionally modified components on both sides.

1. Old limit position
2. New limit position

Move soft top into position shown.

Support both sides of soft top and soft top compartment lid with suitably broad aid to ensure that soft top is held in a stable position and does not fold up from front to rear.

NOTE: Place protective mats in passenger compartment to protect it against swarf, removed rivets and damage.

Drill out rivet (1) on left and right and remove limit positions (2).

Apply corrosion protection if necessary.

Attach new limit position (1) from above.

Installation note:
Tip of limit position in direction of travel.

Insert rivet and use riveting tongs.

Measure 2:

Identifying feature:

A possible complaint is in the form of a protruding upper thread.

Refinish the seal carrier (main pillar)

NOTE: The seal carrier is cropped by approx. 6 mm and the outer edges are rounded.

Move soft top into position shown.

Support both sides of soft top and soft top compartment lid with suitably broad aid to ensure that soft top is held in a stable position and does not fold up from front to rear.

Check seal carrier distance:

Measure distance from lower edge of elongated hole to lower edge of seal carrier.

Dimension (x) can have the following values:
- 40 mm
Previous version = crop.

- 34 mm
New version = do not crop.

Dimension (X) = mark 6 mm parallel to lower edge.

Crop seal carrier to dimension.

Round outer edges with file and deburr interface.

IMPORTANT:
- All sharp edges must be rounded.
- After completing the work, apply corrosion protection.

Measure 3:

Identifying feature:

Possible complaint in the form of damage in the C-pillar area.

Move soft top into position shown.

Support both sides of soft top and soft top compartment lid with suitably broad aid to ensure that soft top is held in a stable position and does not fold up from front to rear.

Angle adjustment (by approx. 25°) of linkage limit position (1) on main bearing on left and right.

Remove angled and round protective cap (1) at the limit position of the main bearing on left and right.

Installation note:
The soft top must be located in this position to adjust the limit position correctly.

Attach a suitable tool (e. g. an offset ring spanner SW 10) to the limit position of the main bearing up to the upholstery.

Carefully bend limit position forward with the tool, parallel to the edge of the main bearing.

Bend limit position (1) forward as shown.

The limit position (1) must lie parallel to the cutting edge of the main bearing after bending.

IMPORTANT: Apply corrosion protection.

Fit angled or round protective cap (1) onto the limit stop of the main bearing.
