PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Program MSS70 DME - Tank Ventilation Diagnostics

MODEL
E85 Z4 M Roadster with S54 engine produced 02/10/2006 through 03/20/2006

SITUATION
Fault code: 2A1A: Tank Ventilation System, Function is erroneously stored in the DME. The "Service Engine Soon" lamp is illuminated if the same fault code is stored again during the subsequent driving cycle.

CAUSE
DME software calibration error.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action affects E85 vehicles with the S54 engine produced between 02/10/2006 and 03/20/2006.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.





CORRECTION

Program the DME using Progman V21.2 or higher ( V21.02.00 is displayed in the Progman installation status screen).

PROCEDURE

1. Connect an approved battery charger and DK diagnostic head per SI B09 05 01.

2. Start a new Progman session and select "Z" series E85.

3. Select "Load Software" and answer "No" to the query as to whether any control modules have been replaced.

4. Select "DME" from the list of control units.

5. Select the "Program" menu and then "Update Software" in the submenu. The measures plan will then be determined and displayed.

6. Select "Accept" and "Start" to complete the measure plan. The final report is shown when the DME programming is complete. If necessary, determine and any clear faults using the GT1 diagnosis path.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 467. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-295) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 467 printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
