SUBJECT
Fuel Level Inaccurate After Refilling Fuel Tank
MODEL
E70 (X5 and X5 M) with N52K, N62TU and S63 engines from start of production up to 8/2009
E71 (X6 and X6 M) with N54, N63 and S63 engines from start of production up to 8/2009
SITUATION
The customer complains that after refilling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge will intermittently display 3/4 full and not full. After driving a short distance, the fuel gauge will slowly move to the full position.
CAUSE
The fuel level sensor arm is binding due to overly tight tolerances of the fuel level sensor float arm pivot points.
PROCEDURE
Replace the left and right fuel level sensors in accordance with Repair Instruction REP 16 12 001 Removing and installing/replacing left fuel level sensor and REP 16 12 000 Removing and installing/replacing right fuel level sensor.
Important:
Some replacement fuel level sensor parts may have been incorrectly assembled, using the attachment to this SI B you can determine if the plastic white level sensor mounting bracket is installed correctly on the body of the sensor. If found mounted incorrectly it can be removed, turned around 180° and then reinstalled again prior to installation. Failure to verify that this part is assembled correctly will result in the vehicles fuel gauge to read nearly empty when the fuel tank is full or the fuel level sensor arm can interfere with other objects inside the fuel tank resulting in the vehicle running out of fuel.
Note:
TeileClearing authorization is not required for the fuel level sensor replacement procedures described in this bulletin. Please write in the comment section of the warranty claim: "Replaced per SI B16 08 10".
