Knocking Noise from Front Suspension
MODEL
X5 (E70) produced from 9/06 to 4/07
SITUATION
The customer may report a knocking noise from the front suspension which occurs while driving over bumps or uneven road surfaces. The customer may additionally note some vibrations from the steering wheel when this occurs.
CAUSE
An insufficiently tightened lower front control arm or thrust arm may cause this condition.
CORRECTION
Place the vehicle in the normal position; refer to Repair Instruction RA 32 00 ... "Moving vehicle into the normal position". Check the tightening torques for the bolts which fasten the front lower control arms and thrust arms to the axle carrier. If necessary, tighten the bolts to the appropriate torque as per Tightening torques RA 32 12 "Control Arms and Struts". A wheel alignment is not necessary in conjunction with this repair.
PARTS INFORMATION
Only components which have been damaged should be replaced. Refer to ETK if parts replacement is necessary.
