SUBJECT
Energy Diagnosis "Most Likely Cause" Frequent Wakeups
MODEL
E70 (X5)
SITUATION
When performing an Energy Diagnosis test plan, the "Most Likely Cause" is listed as "Frequent Wakeups". The Footwell Module (FRM) is identified in the list of modules multiple times with 0 minutes since the last wakeup.
CAUSE
1. Software error in the Junction Box Electronics (JBE).
2. A control module is actually causing wakeups.
PROCEDURE
In order to distinguish between the JBE software error and actual wakeups, please perform the following procedure.
1. Complete the Energy Diagnosis test plan until the "Most Likely Cause(s)" are listed.
2. If "Frequent Wakeups" is listed as the number 1 cause, follow the instructions in the test plan to record the results and clear the wakeup history memory of the JBE.
3. If other "Most Likely Cause(s)" are given follow the instructions as given in the test plan.
4. Follow the instructions in SI B61 08 00 for setting the GT1/DIS for closed circuit current monitoring.
5. Leave the vehicle in the same state as the customer would, locked/unlocked, etc. Remember to turn the key off and disconnect the OPS/OPPS head and battery charger if installed.
6. It is best if the vehicle is left undisturbed for at least 6 hours.
7. During this time the JB will monitor for any new wakeups that may occur. At the same time the GT1 will monitor the closed circuit current of the vehicle.
8. After the rest period, check the GT1/DIS measurement to see if any abnormal wakeups occurred.
9. Restart diagnosis with the DIS/GT1 and enter into the wakeup analysis test plan as follows: Function selection\Service functions\Body\Power Supply\Waking of vehicle\Analysis of prompters.
10. The test plan will then indicate the wakeups that have occurred over the rest period. Please note that the last wakeup (from unlocking or waking the vehicle) will always be displayed at the top of the list. For example if the vehicle was left unlocked and the driver's door was opened to wake the vehicle after the rest period, the FRM will be indicated as the last wakeup.
11. Compare the results from the test plan with the measurement data taken with the GT1/DIS. If both of these indicate wakeups occurred, continue troubleshooting the control module indicated in the results of the test plan and its peripherals (switches, sensors, etc.) to isolate the cause of the wakeups.
[NEW]12. If the GT1/DIS measurement does not indicate wakeups, this is the software error of the JBE. Proceed to the next step.
[NEW]13. Update the complete vehicle software per SI B09 05 01 (Programming and Coding with Progman) Procedure B, using Progman V25.00.00 (Target Data Status E070-07-03-510) or higher.
[NEW]WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
