SUBJECT
Service Action: Repair the Fuel Tank Level Sensor
MODEL
E70 X5 3.0si and X5 4.8i vehicles produced from 5/31/2007 to 7/03/2007
SITUATION
On affected vehicles, the left side fuel level sending unit may not have been fully secured correctly within the fuel tank. In this situation the fuel tank level contents and mileage range displays may not be accurate.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 3.0si and X5 4.8i vehicles with N52K and N62TU engines which were produced from 5/31/2007 to 7/03/2007.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Remove the left side sending unit from the fuel tank and secure the fuel level sensor.
PROCEDURE
Follow the repair instruction with safety precautions in TIS: RA 16 12 001 - Removing and Installing or replacing fuel gauge sensor (petrol/gasoline), left
Perform the necessary preliminary work:
1. Draw off fuel from fuel tank
2. Remove rear seat bench
Note:
* It is not necessary to remove the right side sending unit assembly and the left side sending unit only needs to be lifted upwards far enough to secure the fuel level sensor as described below.
* On vehicles equipped with 3rd row seating remove the left rear seat as described below.
Important:
Mask the sill and entrance with protective material to prevent damage during seat removal.
Unclip cover (1) and remove in direction of arrow
Remove bolt (1)
Installation torque: 43 Nm Remove bolt (1)
Remove bolt (1)
Remove cover in direction of arrow
Fold the rear seat back forwards Remove bolts (1)
Installation torque: 43 Nm
Unclip and disconnect plug connection (1)
Slide the rear seat forwards (guide pin from the guide)
Lift the rear seat out of the vehicle with the help of a second person
Reassemble in the reverse order after the following fuel level sensor repair is complete.
Disconnect plug (1) and remove cover (2) to access left fuel sending unit.
Remove nuts (1) and remove service cover (2) for left fuel tank sending unit.
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Unlock quick-release fastener (2) and detach fuel feed line.
Unlock quick-release fastener (3) for vent line and detach.
Loosen hose clamp (2) and remove completely from clamping ring (1).
Note:
A flexible A 1/4" extension can be used to access and release the hose clamp.
Spread the clamping ring (1) and remove.
Carefully lift the left sending unit upwards to check the fuel level sensor placement.
Installation:
Always replace seal (1) which comes with a clamping ring and new clamp in the repair kit.
Secure the level sensor (1) by pushing it fully against the housing stop (2). It should be felt to "snap" into place when the lock tabs engage. Replace sending unit seal and carefully reassemble back into the fuel tank.
Installation:
Make sure that new clamping ring is installed in correct position. The Indentation on clamping ring must line up with raised section (3) of tank.
Install the new hose clamp with torque break-off head properly into the new clamp ring (1).
Tighten hose clip until torque break-off head (2) breaks off.
PARTS INFORMATION
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 503. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-355) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 503 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
