SUBJECT
Wind Deflector Broken

MODEL
E70 (X5) produced up to March 2007

SITUATION
The wind deflector of the panoramic sunroof is deployed unevenly, and/or one of the side arms of deflector is broken. In either case, one of the two spring attachment points will no longer be properly secured to the sunroof cassette.

CAUSE
The spring attachment point for the wind deflector has either come loose from the cassette or has broken where the spring secures to it.

CORRECTION
The spring attachment point may now be replaced separately. It is no longer necessary to replace the entire sunroof cassette.

PROCEDURE

1. Open the sunroof fully.

2. Using a curved pick tool, such as the one shown in the illustration (PN 88 88 6 513 057), hook the wind deflector spring (1) and press it rearward to relieve spring tension off the attachment point (4).

3. Carefully pry up the retaining tab (3) of the attachment point (4) using a small flat head screwdriver (2) just enough to free if from the recessed portion of the cassette.

4. Press the attachment point (1) rearward to the opening in the cable guide (2).

5. Rotate the rear edge of the attachment point upward as it is being pressed back in order to release it from the channel in which it slides.

NOTE:
Ensure that the pick tool on the spring remains engaged or the spring may become lodged in the channel.

6. With the attachment point (3) removed from the cassette, a flat head screwdriver (2) can be used to remove the spring (1) from the attachment point.

7. A new attachment point (PN 54 10 7 171 089) should be installed in the reverse order of the old parts removal.

8. If the wind deflector has been damaged, it too should be replaced per repair instruction RA 54 13 090.
