Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair




31 21 090 - Replacing (removing and installing) left or right swivel bearing





Special tools required:
- 31 2 200 31 2 200 Expander Tool





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove brake disc Removing and Installing/Replacing Both Front Brake Discs
- Remove pulse generator from swivel bearing Replacing One Front Pulse Generator
- Remove control arm from swivel bearing Front Axle
- Remove tie rod end from swivel bearing Replacing Left or Right Tie Rod
- Remove tension strut from swivel bearing Removing and Installing/Replacing Both Tension Struts

After installation:
- Replacement only: Perform chassis alignment check





Important!
- Check sensor head and line from pulse generator prior to installation for external damage, replacing if necessary.





Support swivel bearing with workshop jack and a suitable mounting.

Release nut and remove holder for brake hose, pulse generator and if necessary brake pad sensor.

Remove screw towards front.

Expand swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 200 31 2 200 Expander Tool.

Lower workshop jack and remove swivel bearing.

Installation:
Keep press fit of swivel gearing and spring strut in lower area clean and free from oil and grease.

Spread swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 200 31 2 200 Expander Tool, align by means of gap to web on back of spring strut and raise as far as it will go.

Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 31 3AZ Spring Struts (Front).





Replacement only:

Modify or if necessary replace wheel bearing Front Axle.

Modify brake guard plate Removing and Installing/Replacing a Brake Carrier/Brake Guard Plate at Front.
