Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair
34 41 135 - Removing and installing or replacing both Bowden cables for parking brake
Important!
Read and comply with General Information Service and Repair.
Bowden cables may only be replaced in pairs.
Risk of damage:
Parking brake may only be released by hand with the emergency release tool (1) from the on-board tool kit!
No auxiliary equipment (such as e.g. a power screwdriver) may be used.
Excessively fast rotational movement or excessively high torque at both end stops (spring stop/assembly position stop) may damage the actuating unit!
Max. torque at both stops 5 Nm!
Observe safety instructions on raising the vehicle 00 .. ... Lifting Vehicle With A Lifting Platform.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove both rear wheels Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel
- Remove brake disks Removing and Installing/Replacing Both Rear Brake Discs
- Disconnect parking brake Bowden cables from wheel brake
- Unscrew holder for Bowden cables from body
- Remove luggage compartment floor trim panel 51 47 101 Removing and Installing/Replacing Luggage Compartment Floor Trim Panel
- E67:
Remove starter battery
Release screws on parking brake housing cover and remove housing cover.
Installation Note:
Tightening torque 34 41 2AZ 34 41 Parking Brake.
Important!
Risk of damage:
Max. torque at end stop 5 Nm!
Failure to observe this stipulation will result in damage to the actuating unit!
Slowly release parking brake to just before end stop with emergency release tool (1) from on-board tool kit.
Raise end stop (1) with screwdriver.
Continue releasing parking brake slowly with emergency release tool until assembly position is reached (cable pulleys rest on outer housing walls (2)).
Unfasten gasket (1) and pull out of housing a little.
Press on tabs (2) with screwdriver in order to unlock Bowden cables.
Pull Bowden cable mountings out of parking brake housing a little.
Unhook Bowden cables from cable pulleys (3).
Remove Bowden cables from below.
Installation Note:
Tabs of seal (1) must engage in parking brake mounting tray.
End sleeves of Bowden cables must engage in parking brake housing.
Installation Note:
Ensure flush mounting between seal and housing.
To facilitate installation, use silicone spray (refer to BMW Parts Service) as antiseize agent.
Important!
After installing Bowden cables.
- Vehicle at standstill.
- Ignition turned on.
- Touch parking brake button three times at intervals of 5 seconds.
- Carry out brake test on brake analyzer.
- Drive car with rear axle only onto dynamic brake analyzer.
- Engine off.
- Touch parking brake button and ensure uniform increase.
