SUBJECT
Service Engine Soon Lamp Illuminated: FC 2C2D, 2C3D, 2C2E,2C3E
MODEL
E90 and E91 (3 Series), E60 and E61 (5 Series) equipped with N52 engine Vehicles produced from start of production up to 9/2006
SITUATION
Customer complains that the "Service Engine Soon" light is illuminated while driving. One or more of the following fault codes may be stored in DME memory.
2C2D Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter 1, overrun check - Signal during inertia fuel shutoff below threshold
2C3D Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter 1, line fault - Open circuit, pump current path or virtual ground
2C2E Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter 2, overrun check - Signal during inertia fuel shutoff below threshold
2C3E Oxygen sensor before catalytic converter 2, line fault - Open circuit, pump current path or virtual ground
CAUSE
Vehicle produced up to 11/2005:
The pre-catalyst O2 sensor connectors may be loosely connected or the crankcase ventilation oil return line is clogged, jammed or frozen.
Vehicles produced from 11/2005 and up to 9/2006:
The pre-catalyst O2 sensor connectors may be loosely connected or the O2 Sensor is defective.
PROCEDURE
Vehicles produced up to 11/2005:
1. On a customer complaint basis only, attempt to pull apart the faulted oxygen sensor connector(s) to determine if proper connection is present and the connector is locked. If the connector pulls apart (not locked), reconnect the O2 sensor connector(s). Clear the fault memory and return the vehicle to the customer. If the connector does not appear to have been loosely connected refer to step 2.
2. Replace the crankcase ventilation oil return hose. Refer to parts information for correct application. Clear the fault memory and return the vehicle to the customer.
Vehicles produced from 11/2005 and up to 9/2006:
