SUBJECT
GM6 Transmission Goes into Failsafe with Fault 56BD Stored

MODEL
MY 2007 E83 with the GM6 (6L45R) transmission produced from SOP to 04/2007

MY 2007 E90, E91, E92, E93 with the GM6 (6L45R) transmission produced 09/2006 to 4/12/2007

SITUATION
The transmission has gone into failsafe and has stored EGS fault:

56BD: Clutch, gears 2 and 6, failed

In most cases the fault is a one-time occurrence, not currently present, and the vehicle drives and shifts normally.

Other less frequent gear monitoring faults that may exhibit a similar complaint are:

56B9: Clutch gears 3, 5 and R - Indicated neutral test failed

56BB: Clutch gears 1, 4, 5, 6 and R - Indicated neutral test failed

56BF: Clutch gears 1, 4, 5, 6 and R - Indicated neutral test failed

CAUSE
EGS software diagnostic sensitivity

CORRECTION
For E83 only:
- On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the EGS using only Progman V25.01.00 or higher.

For E90, E91, E92, E93 vehicles only:
- On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the EGS using only Progman V25.02.00 or higher.

Only vehicles at a current vehicle integration level of E89x-07-03-520 or lower are affected.

Refer to SI B 24 11 07 for more information on GM6 transmission adaptation and terminology.

Important notes:

The MY 2007 E83 uses D-CAN communication and only an OPS/OPPS head with the "CAN included" cable can be used for both programming and diagnosis.
Refer to SI B07 08 06 and SI B07 02 06 for information concerning the "CAN included" cables. The transmission must be in the "Park:" position other wise the programming may abort with error:

^ EGS Diagnostic trouble 2089 (COAPI) - Programming mode changeover faulty.

^ Always use a properly configured Deutronic battery charger, with the vehicle's battery fully charged, before beginning the Progman session.

After the EGS programming is complete, Progman prompts to carry out transmission adaptation via the "Service Function" path.

Do Not Perform this function! It does not work correctly and may cause faults to set.

Perform a longer test drive to begin the transmission adaptation re-learning process. This will help to ensure acceptable shift quality before returning the vehicle to the customer.
