SUBJECT
N54 - Diagnostic for DME FC 29F1/29F2
MODEL
[NEW] E60 and E61 (5 Series) with N54 engine
[NEW] E71 (X6) with N54 engine
[NEW] E82 and E88 (1 Series) with N54 engine
[NEW] E90, E91, E92 and E93 (3 Series) with N51, N52K and N54 engine
SITUATION
The customer may complain of the following:
^ Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated;
^ The engine entered fail-safe mode with reduced power.
Also, DIS/GT1 diagnosis shows fault codes 29F1 (10737) and/or 29F2 (10738), "High fuel pressure system, plausibility", stored in the MSD80 (DME) control module. The maximum fuel pressure in the mechanical fuel pump system does not exceed 5 bars.
CAUSE
The possible causes are:
1. Incorrect adaptation values of the high pressure pump control valve; or
2. Failure of the high-pressure fuel pump.
CORRECTION
In case fault codes 29F1/29F2 are stored in the DME, follow the diagnostic plan below:
1. Using ISID/GT1 loaded with the current diagnostic software, clear the DME fault memory and reset adaptation values, selecting the path:
^ Service Functions
Drive
^ Motor Electronics
^ Adjustment Programs
^ Clear Adaptations; then Test plan
^ (2): Reset adaptive values.
2. On vehicles equipped with ZF 6HP19 automatic transmissions, also recode the complete vehicle using Progman V23 or higher. Otherwise, fault code CF33 (DME time-out) is going to be stored in the EGS transmission control module.
3. After resetting the adaptations, test drive the vehicle to verify effectiveness.
4. If fault codes 29F1/29F2 return immediately after starting the engine, then follow the appropriate GT1/DIS test plan.
5. In case the ISID/GT1 test plan indicates that the high pressure fuel pump is defective, the adaptation reset procedure described above has to be performed after the fuel pump replacement.
