September 2007
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 07E-A01: N54 - Reprogramming Vehicle (DME) for OBD Diagnostic
MODEL
E90, E92 with N54 produced up to 10/10/2006
SITUATION
The DME programming, as originally installed, may cause the OBD diagnostic not to detect potential malfunctions of various emission relevant components. As a result, in case of a component malfunction (e.g. oxygen sensor, or EGS control module), the "Service Engine Soon" light will not illuminate.
This diagnostic software error would not cause any driveability problems.
In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this campaign, the software in the vehicle's control units will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 335i sedan and coupe vehicles with N54 engines which were produced from 05/24/2006 up to 10/10/2006.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
On the affected vehicles, update and recode complete vehicle as per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B using the current version of Progman.
Important:
The improved DME software was originally introduced in Progman V23.2 (integration level E89x-06- 09-540).
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-351) and with a ball point pen print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 50 labels will be sent to all BMW automotive centers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to windshield.
For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.
Note:
Additional labels can be ordered on line at BMW TIS.
