SUBJECT
Lumbar Support Inoperative
MODEL
E93 (3 Series Convertible) produced up to 2/2007
SITUATION
The lumbar support pump can be heard running when the activation switch is pressed, but the lumbar support does not inflate.
CAUSE
The air supply hose is kinked between the lumbar support pump and valve.
CORRECTION
^ Do not replace any parts.
^ On a customer complaint basis, install an anti-kink sleeve over the air hose. This sleeve has been installed in production from 2/2007.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the rear panel on the affected seat:
a. Remove the 2 T20 fasteners on the bottom edge of the rear panel
b. Pull back and down from the lower edge of the panel to release it from the seat.
2. Locate the drive unit which is in an insulating jacket on the right side (driver's seat) or left side (passenger seat) of the backrest and is clipped onto the backrest frame.
3. Reach into the backrest and release the clip which holds the drive unit to the frame.
4. Carefully lower the drive unit out through the bottom of the backrest. Avoid twisting the drive unit while lowering as this could result in damage to the air lines or wiring harness.
5. Remove the wire tie (1) which secures the insulating jacket onto the drive unit
6. Pull the drive unit (1) out of the jacket (2).
7. Remove the 2 push pins (3) in order to release the tabs (1) on the top edge of the lumbar support (2).
8. Pull the lumbar support (1) down from the bottom of the backrest.
9. Install the plastic tube (3) (PN 61 13 6 933 301) over the air line (1) which comes off of the drive unit (2).
A=90mm
10. Wrap felt tape (1) around the entire plastic tube and extending beyond the tube (2) by length A.
A=20mm
Each time the fabric tape is wrapped around the tube it should overlap itself by 30 to 50%.
11. Insert the drive unit back into the jacket (1). Close the top of the jacket (1) using a wire tie (2).
NOTE:
Ensure that the wire tie is secured around the wire harness leading to the drive unit.
12. Re-install the lumbar support (1) by pushing it up from the bottom onto the backrest spring mat.
13. The tabs (1) on the left and right side of the lumbar support must be located behind the transverse spring (2) in order for the lumbar support to be positioned correctly.
14. Fold the tabs (1) on the lumbar support around the transverse spring (2) and secure them with the 2 push pins (3) removed previously.
15. Slide the drive unit with jacket (1) back into position between the frame and the backrest spring mat.
16. Seat the connection (1) on the drive unit (2). Clip the drive unit with jacket onto the backrest frame without twisting it.
17. Re-assemble the seat and ensure that the lumbar support is operating correctly.
