SUBJECT
Engine Fails to Start after CAS Replacement

MODEL
E90, E91, E92 (3 Series)[NEW] Vehicles from 9/2006

[NEW]E60, E61 (5 Series) Vehicles from 3/2007

[NEW]E63, E64 (6 Series) Vehicles from 3/2007

SITUATION
The engine no longer starts following replacement of the CAS (Car Access System) control unit. Ignition key positions KL-R and KL-15 are active, but the starter does not turn when the start button is pressed.

CAUSE
The CAS is still in "Assembly mode". In "Assembly mode", control of the starter motor (KL-50) is deactivated. Normally, "Assembly mode" is deleted as part of the alignment process.

PROCEDURE
As a work-around until a software solution is available, follow the procedure below to delete the KL-50 assembly mode:

^ Restart DISPlus/GT1 and select the vehicle by means of manual identification. (Do not have a head connected).

^ Manually select "5 Series / E60 / 530i_M54_SED / USA_LHD / 2004_3", then press the right arrow.

^ Reconnect the head.

^ From the Diagnosis Operation and Component Selection screen, select "Function selection / Service functions / Drive / Motor electronics / Adjustment programs / DME-CAS", the click on "Test plan". Follow the screens to select option # 2 "Start value calibration (reset)".

^ Ignore any error messages.

^ At the completion of the test plan, "Assembly mode" will be deleted and engine start enabled.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Please refer to the latest KSD for all applicable labor operations and allowances.

If the appropriate labor operation is not contained in KSD, then a work time labor operation should be used.
