Replacing Front Muffler

18 12 044 - Replacing front muffler (N52, N52K)





Special tools required:
- 00 2 210 00 2 210 Exhaust Pipe Cutter
- 31 2 220 31 2 220 Support Plate






Warning!
Scalding hazard!

Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- E91/ E92/ E93 only: Remove tension strut 51 71 482 - Removing and installing/replacing left or right tension strut (on rear axle) (up to 03/2007) on rear axle.





Support front muffler with special tool 31 2 220 31 2 220 Support Plate.





Note:
If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new front muffler (1).

Carry over cutting line to faulty front muffler (1) and mark out.





Cut exhaust pipe at marked point with special tool 00 2 210 00 2 210 Exhaust Pipe Cutter and deburr.





Unscrew nuts.

Installation Note:
Replace self-locking nuts.

Replace seal.

Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ 18 20 Exhaust System Suspension.





Release bolt and remove bracket (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ 18 20 Exhaust System Suspension.





Unfasten screw connection.

Installation Note:
Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ 18 20 Exhaust System Suspension.





Release bolts along line and remove reinforcement plate (1).

Lower front muffler and remove.





Installation Note:
Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamp and align.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 8AZ 18 20 Exhaust System Suspension.





Note:
Check exhaust system for leaks.
