Body - Wind Noise From The Sunroof Area
SI B54 01 08Special Roofs
January 2008
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Wind Noise from the Panoramic Sunroof
MODEL
E61 (5 Series Sports Wagon), E83 (X3), and E91 (3 Series Sports Wagon) produced through the first quarter of 2007
SITUATION
A wind noise can be heard from the sunroof after previously being closed from the raised position. The intensity of the noise increases with speed. The noise is not present after the sunroof is closed from the open/retracted position.
CAUSE
When the sunroof is closed from the raised position, it presses down on the front seal of the rear glass panel and as a result, the glass panels do not sit flush with each other. When the front and rear glass panels are not flush, a wind noise will be produced.
CORRECTION
A software update will change the logic of how the sunroof glass closes from the raised position. When the front glass panel is closing, it will drop below the leading edge of the rear panel, and then rise up to be flush with it.
PROCEDURE
1. Determine whether the software update is necessary by raising the sunroof glass and then observing it while closing.
2. If the front glass panel lowers and stops, the software needs to be updated.
a. Program and code the vehicle with the most recent Progman version. Refer to SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization and Programming), Procedure B.
Note that Progman will automatically reprogram all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
3. If the front glass panel lowers to below the front edge of the rear glass panel and then rises up to be approximately flush with it, no software update is necessary.
a. Adjust the sunroof as necessary per repair instruction RA 54 13 003.
b. Inspect the integrity and fit of the perimeter seal and replace as necessary.
