Campaign - EGS Software Update For Shift Quality
SI B24 05 09Automatic Transmission
August 2009
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action:
Program Control Units (EGS) - Gearshift Comfort
MODEL
E90, E92, and E93 (3 Series) with the N51 engine produced from 9/01/2006 to 7/03/2007
SITUATION
The data exchange between the DME (engine control unit) and the EGS (electronic transmission control unit) may be disrupted.
This fault may result in unadapted gearshift points, causing gear changes to be either too soft or too hard.
Actuation of the torque convertor clutch could also be delayed.
CAUSE
EGS software calibration error
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E90, E92, and E93 vehicles with N51 engines which were produced from 9/01/2006 to 7/03/2007.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
1. Connect the workshop system and an approved battery charger.
2. Perform a vehicle test.
3. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.34.2 or later.
4. Continue the vehicle test to complete all rework procedures as listed in the ISTA/P final report and clear the fault memory.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 547. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-366) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1),
B. Punch out code number 547 (2) printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
In cases where ISTA requires the replacement of control modules or additional programming because certain control modules failed to program correctly~ print out the Measures Plan and Final Report and attach these reports to the RO in the vehicle file. This additional work should be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin using the labor operation and labor allowance from the KSD.
