Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair


Replacing left/right swivel bearing

Caution:
Align/adjust front axle after assembly, refer to Alignment, Service and Repair.

Warning:
Collar nut must be locked by caulking at flat areas of output shaft!






Remove wheel.
Release collar nut on output shaft; operate brake to do so.

Installation:
Replace collar nut.
Tightening torque:
- Drive flange to axle shaft
- (4WD) 420 Nm
Lock collar nut by caulking it at flat areas of output shaft!

Remove brake disk.
Remove ABS pulse generator, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.





Unfasten nut.
Press off tie rod with special tool 32 3 090.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Replace self-locking nut.
Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening torque:
- Hex screw on bearing block for adjustment of steering wheel
- Self locking nut 3.0 Nm
Note: Adjustment lever in clamped position.






Unfasten screws.
Follow instruction in event of firmly seated guide joint in swivel bearing.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Guide joint to swivel bearing 60 Nm
Replace Screws





Unfasten nut.
Press control arm off swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 240.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque:
- Control arm on steering knuckle/swivel bearing 80 Nm





Screw on special tools 33 2 111/33 2 116/33 2 117/33 2 150 with 5 wheel studs (1).
Press output shaft out of drive flange; grip with tire iron (2) in so doing.

Installation:





Lightly oil Output shaft splines and insert into drive flange splines.
Screw on special tool 33 2 118.

Installation:





Screw on special tools 33 2 116/33 2 150 with 5 wheel studs (1).
Draw in output shaft with special tool 33 2 115; grip with tire iron in so doing.





Unscrew nuts. Remove swivel bearing.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Spring strut shock absorber to pivot mount 250 Nm





Note:
Fit bracket (1).





Clamp swivel bearing with aluminum clamping jaws in vise.
Screw special tools 33 2 116/33 2 150 with 5 wheel studs onto drive flange.
Drive out drive flange with special tool 33 4 200.

Caution:
The wheel bearing is destroyed when the drive flange is removed and must not be reused!

If necessary, detach bearing inner race from drive flange.





Remove dust protection sleeve (1) and brake guard plate (2) and fit on new swivel bearing.
Install new wheel bearing in swivel bearing.
