Ball Joint: Service and Repair


Removing and installing/replacing guide joint in swivel bearing

Remove wheel.





Release nut (1). Release screws (2).

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Replace self-locking nut (1), grip hexagon socket if necessary, tightening torque for nut (1):
- Control arm on steering knuckle/swivel bearing 80 Nm
- Tightening torque for screws (2):
- Guide joint to swivel bearing 60 Nm
Replace screws





Remove guide joint from swivel bearing.
If guide joint is firmly seated in swivel bearing, screw special tool 33 4 205 onto taper pin and drive out with special tool 33 4 200.

Caution:
If guide joint has been driven out with special tool, it must be replaced.





Screw on nut a few turns so that guide joint does not slip off unchecked when forced off.
Press guide joint with special tool 31 2 240 out of tension strut.
Unscrew nut and remove guide joint.
