Replacing Power Steering Gear



Replacing Power Steering Gear

Caution:
Adjust front axle after assembly.
Make sure all parts are absolutely clean.
No dirt is allowed to enter the system.
Seal off pipe connections with plugs.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.
Draw hydraulic fluid out of tank and do not reuse.

Installation:
Bleed power steering.

Remove front wheels.
Remove engine underguard and if necessary underhood shield.
Remove reinforcement plate.
Release nuts on left and right of engine support arm.
Raise engine with special tool 00 0 200, described in Removing oil sump/front axle differential, Refer to Engine.





Unfasten screws.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.

Caution:
Check distance between engine carrier and stem of double joint.

Tightening torque:
- Steering gear to front axle carrier
- M12 10.9 100 Nm





Remove lower clamping screw on clamp.
Set steering gear to straight-ahead position - markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned.
Remove ignition key in this position. The steering wheel cannot be turned any more and the slip ring in the steering column switch is not damaged.
Detach clamp from steering gear.

Installation:
Set steering gear to straight-ahead position - markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned.
Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw





Slacken lock nut (1) on tie rod on left and right.
Screw tie rod (2) out of ball joint on left and right.





Brace front axle support with workshop hoist.
Unscrew left and right bolts.
Lower workshop hoist.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Front axle carrier to engine carrier
- M12 10.9 100 Nm
Note: Replace Screws.





Release banjo bolts.
Remove steering gear to left side.

Installation:
Replace sealing rings (D).
Tightening torque:
- Hydraulic line connections to vane pump and steering gear
- M10 Banjo bolt 12 Nm
- M14 Banjo bolt 35 Nm
- M16 Banjo bolt 40 Nm
- M18 Banjo bolt 45 Nm
- Cap screw 36 Nm
