SUBJECT
M3; SMG FC 056 & FC 054 - Diagnostic Hints

MODEL
E46 M3 vehicles equipped with SMG

SITUATION
SMG light is illuminated; FC 056 (On Period, Hydraulic Unit) and/or FC 054 (Activation, Hydraulic Pump, Implausible Value) are stored in the SMG control module memory.

CAUSE
A defective SMG Pump Relay K5360, SMG Hydraulic Control Unit or Pressure Accumulator.

PROCEDURE
On a customer complaint basis only, perform the following procedure:

Read the SMG fault memory and perform the test modules for faults stored (FC 054 and 056).

If FC 054 (Activation, Hydraulic Pump, Implausible Value) is present, then replace the entire Hydraulic Unit (PN 21 53 2 229 715) and K5360 Pump Relay (PN 12 63 1 742 690). Please refer to Repair Instruction 21 53 010 for replacement procedure.

If FC 056 is present, check the accumulator "pre-pressuring pressure" using the following procedure:

1. Select "Function Selection"

2. Select "Service Functions"

3. Select "Drive"

4. Select "Transmission Management"

5. Select "Test Functions"

If the status indicates that pressure is outside the set points indicated on the screen then, replace the Pressure Accumulator (PN 21 532 229 716) and K5360 Pump Relay (PN 12 631 742 690). Please refer
to Repair Instruction 21 53 516 for replacement procedure.
