Companion Flange: Service and Repair


Replacing Flexible Disk For Propeller Shaft
Remove complete exhaust system.


Remove heat shield (1).





Release screw ring (1) several turns with special tool 261 040.

Installation:
Tighten screw ring (1) with special tool 26 1 040.






Release screws.


Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Only tighten screw connection by way of nut.





Grip propeller shaft and release nuts.
Tightening torque,Center mount = 21 Nm.

Push propeller shaft together (at sliding section).

Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing (1).

Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange.





Note on installation (except E46 compact):
Pull off cover tape from butylene tape on both sides.
Stick butylene tape (1) to outside of center bearing (2).

Caution: Remove butylene tape already attached to center bearing. Clean adhesive area on center bearing and on body. Then coat adhesive area on body with mineral oil. This coating with oil is necessary to facilitate insertion of the sticky butylene tape in the propeller shaft tunnel, This prevents the butylene tape from being deformed.





Installation:
Press center bearing (2) into transmission tunnel.





Note: To protect universal joints, tie back propeller shaft in area of center bearing.

Release screws and remove flexible disk (1) from propeller shaft.


Installation:
The arrows (3), on the circumference of the flexible disk, must point in each case to the flange arms (2).

Replace self-locking nuts.

Only tighten screw connection by way of nut.





Installation:
Check centering mount.
Replace damaged centering mount.
Grease centering mount.
