Replacing Shaft Seal For Drive Flange Left or Right
Final drive 168/188 compact:

After completion of work, check transmission oil level.

Caution: Use the approved gear oil in this final drive.

Failure to comply with this instruction will result in serious damage to the final drive.





E46/5 (compact):
Remove spare wheel.
Release retaining screws of spare wheel bracket (1).
Tilt spare wheel bracket (1) downwards.
Remove stabilizer bar from rear axle carrier.

Left side:
Lower exhaust.





Release screws.
Tightening torque, 33 21 1AZ.
Remove output shaft from drive flange.

Installation:
Fit shims (1).

Note: Shims are already fitted on "NT output shafts". NT -> "New Technology".





Use a plastic mallet to drive out drive flange.





Caution: Replace snap ring (1).

Coat drive flange on contact face of shaft seal with final drive oil.

Push in drive flange and turn until flange splines engage splines of differential.

Press in drive flange further until snap ring can be heard to snap into place.





Withdraw shaft seal with special tools 00 5 010 and 321 060.





Coat housing plate flange and sealing lips of new shaft seal with differential oil.

Drive new shaft seal firmly home with special tool 00 5 500 and 33 4 240 for final drive 188 compact 33 3 400 for final drive 168 compact respectively.
