Replacing Left or Right Output Shaft


Note: After completing work, check front axle differential fluid level.


Caution!
Use only the approved gear oil in this front axle differential.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the differential!

Remove engine underguard at front, middle and rear.
Remove right heat shield from front axle support.

Note: There is no need to perform a front axle alignment check.
Therefore only the following parts are removed/installed:
- Remove front wheel.
- Remove ABS pulse generator.
- Detach ride level sensor on control arm.
- Detach brake hose from mounting.
- Remove brake caliper housing with linings and tie back.
- Unfasten stabilizer link from stabilizer.
- Release collar nut on output shaft.
- Press output shaft out of drive flange.
- Detach control arm at front and rear from front axle support.
- Tilt swivel bearing to one side.





Press output shaft with special tool 31 1 170 out of front axle differential and remove.

Installation:
Push output shaft over resistance of snap ring.
Output shaft coupling must snap audibly into place.





Note: Replace snap ring on output shaft.

Caution!
Replace radial seal on output shaft.





Lever radial seal (1) with a screwdriver (2) out of front axle differential housing (3) or bearing pedestal.





Remove protective sleeve (2) from radial seal (1).

Note: New radial seal (1) is equipped with a protective sleeve (2).
The protective sleeve prevents the sealing lip from being damaged when the output shaft is inserted into the front axle differential.





Drive radial seal firmly home with special tool 31 5 130.
Coat sealing lips of new radial seal with transmission fluid.
Carefully insert protective sleeve into radial seal.





Note: Withdraw protective sleeve (1) from radial seal before inserting output shaft as far as it will go.
Cut open protective sleeve and remove.
