SUBJECT
Service Action: Reprogram the SMG Control Unit
MODEL
E46 M3 with the S54 Engine from start of production through August 3, 2004.
SITUATION
Simultaneous operation of the starter motor and the pump for the SMG hydraulic control unit may cause the switch contacts within the SMG relay to wear prematurely. If the relay fails as a result of this wear,
no hydraulic pressure will be available to the SMG transmission.
Subsequently, the unit will not be capable of shifting. The vehicle will operate in emergency mode and the fault lamp will be illuminated
in the instrument cluster.
