Replacing Intermediate Muffler
Warning: Scalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.
Release screws (1) of rear muffler on intermediate muffler.
Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications, Mechanical.
Detach both rear mufflers from intermediate muffler.
Note: For the following work steps, some illustrations of the exhaust system of another BMW car are used.
Measure length (B) of pipe sections on new intermediate muffler.
Transfer determined distance (B) to new installed intermediate muffler.
Cut through and deburr both exhaust pipes at determined point between catalytic converter and intermediate muffler with special tool 00 2 210.
Release screws (1) on rubber mounts and remove intermediate muffler.
Detach rubber mounts from old intermediate muffler and push onto bracket of new intermediate muffler.
The apertures on the new intermediate muffler are sealed with adhesive film.
Completely remove adhesive film from new intermediate muffler.
Make sure there are no foreign bodies in intermediate muffler.
Connect new intermediate muffler and catalytic converters using clamping sleeves.
Installation:
Nuts point downwards.
Align clamping sleeves so that:
^ separation point is in middle of clamping sleeve, and
^ there is sufficient spacing to adjoining components.
