Timing Chain: Service and Repair


BMW does not provide a service procedure to remove the primary or secondary timing chain(s) with the engine in the vehicle.

Primary timing chain replacement will require removal of several components including but not limited to:

- Harmonic Balancer. Service and Repair

- Lower Timing Case Cover. Service and Repair

- Vanos Adjusting Unit. Service and Repair

- Camshaft. Service and Repair

Secondary timing chain replacement will require removal of several components including but not limited to:

- Vanos Adjusting Unit. Service and Repair

- Camshaft. Service and Repair

CAUTION! Incorrect removal/installation without the use of special tools could damage or break the camshafts. Valves could also be bent through contact with the piston crowns. Always note installation instructions and use specified special tools, procedures, and sequences.
