Camshaft: Testing and Inspection

Special tools required

When the engine is switched off, VANOS moves the camshafts to a position which is advantageous to engine starting.
Important! The timing must "not" be checked in this position.
The camshafts must first be turned back to their initial position.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
Remove fan clutch with fan cowl (not E85) Service and Repair
Remove cylinder head cover Service and Repair
Remove all spark plugs. Service and Repair
Disconnect fuel rail
Actuate starter motor for approx. 20-30 secs;, to do so press buttons 1 and 3 alternately on special tool 12 6 050.
Important! Do not press and hold down buttons 1 and 3 permanently.
Press buttons 1 and 3 in short intervals.
Inlet and exhaust VANOS are retracted.
Rotate crankshaft in direction of rotation up to cylinder 1 firing TDC position.
Important! Do not turn the engine back.
Rotate crankshaft in direction of rotation up to cylinder 1 firing TDC position. Locate vibration damper with special tool 11 2 300 or 11 0 480
Check camshaft setting:
Attach special tool 11 9 140 and join in locating bore of inlet camshaft.
Note: The adjustment of the inlet camshaft is correct when special tool 11 9 140 rests flat on the cylinder head.
If the special tool 11 9 140 protrudes to the inlet side, the timing must be readjusted.
Join special tool 11 9 140 in locating bore of exhaust camshaft.
Note: The adjustment of the exhaust camshaft is correct when special tool 11 9 140 rests flat on the cylinder head.
If the special tool 11 9 140 protrudes to the inlet side, the timing must be readjusted.
If necessary, adjust camshaft timing.
Assemble engine.
Remove all special tools.
