Spoiler: Service and Repair



51 71 407 Replacing Rear Spoiler (M3 And M5)

Special tools required:
- 00 9 318

Minimum object temperature of rear spoiler and body ≥ 18 °C.
If this temperature is not achieved, the components must be preheated.

Measure and note down dimensions of old rear spoiler:







Stick on adhesive tape (1) on outside and in center. Mark a stroke at distance (A) on outside of rear lid edge at right angle.

Measure distance (B) as follows:
From front/outer corner (2) of rear lid to rear spoiler (3) at distance (A).

Measure distance (C) from center of front rear lid edge (4) and rear spoiler (3).

Rear spoiler (3) is centered with respect to rear lid on sides.







Carefully detach rear spoiler (1) from rear lid with special tool 00 9 318 (universal wedge) and hot air blower.







Installation:
For cleaning, use a fusel-oil-free disposable cloth or a clean cleaning cloth.
Clean adhesive area of rear lid with spirit.
Drying time at least 1 minute.

Clean adhesive area (1) on rear spoiler (2) with spirit.
Drying time at least 1 minute.

Adhesive tape must be cut out in area of lettering (3) (next work step).
Therefore make a mark (4) with a water soluble marker at end of lettering (3).







Installation:
Avoid the creation of bubbles and folds and do not overstretch when attaching.
Attach adhesive tape (1) all round at a distance of 3 mm to adhesive area (2) of rear spoiler.
Cut out adhesive tape (1) in area of lettering (3).

Caution: Adhesive tape must not be cut through towards the outside..

Press on adhesive tape firmly.
The adhesion of the adhesive tape is increased considerably by contact pressure therefore press down over the entire area with your thumbs and backs of hands.
Pull off liner and stick rear spoiler to rear lid as shown in Fig. R51 2735.
*Liner is protective film for adhesive area.
Press on the rear spoiler firmly with the backs of the hands over the entire area, in particular the ends.
