Convertible Top Position Sensor / Switch: Service and Repair
Removing And Installing/Replacing Sensor For Tensioning Bar
Special tools required:

WARNING:
Danger of locking in position!
Secure tensioning bar and convertible top compartment lid against lowering.
Open tensioning bar (1) and convertible top compartment lid (2) as illustrated.
Build date up to 04/2001, first repair:
Use repair kit 7 066 889 and sensor 7 059 587 for repairs (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
Release screws (1) and (2) and remove cover (3).
Installation Note: Cover (3) is no longer needed.
Screw special tools 13 5 250 and 54 1 210 as illustrated into bolt (1).
CAUTION: Support (2) must be gripped by a second person to prevent convertible top frame from being bent.
Drive bolt (1) with special tools 13 5 250 and 54 1 210 in direction of arrow out of support (2).
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Release screws (2) and feed sensor for tensioning bar (4) out of convertible top frame (3).
A hole must be drilled to accommodate the new sensor.
To do so, use drilling template from repair kit 7 066 889.
Fit drilling template (1) as illustrated.
Insert pin (4) into lower tapped hole and secure drilling template (1) with an M4 screw through upper hole (2) to convertible top frame.
CAUTION: Cover working area (drilling chips!), draw oft if necessary.
Drill a through hole of dia. = 3.3 through drill bush (3).
Cut an M4 thread into bore.
Installation:
Coat thread of pan-head screw (1) from repair kit 7 066 889 with Loctite 270 (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
Secure sensor for tensioning bar with pan-head screw (1).
Tightening torque = 2.5 Nm.
Build date from 04/2001:
NOTE: Cover working area (drilling chips!), draw off if necessary.
Drill a hole of dia. = 3.3 mm and depth = 8.0 mm centrally in bolt head (1) (if necessary, mark bolt head (1) with center punch).
Cut an M4 thread into bore.
Screw special tools 13 5 250 and 54 1 210 as illustrated into bolt (1).
CAUTION: Support (2) must be gripped by a second person to prevent convertible top frame from being bent.
Drive bolt (1) with special tools 13 5 250 and 54 1 210 in direction of arrow out of support (2).
Installation:
Use a new bolt (1). Drive in bolt (1) with a plastic hammer until flush.
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Release screws (2) and feed sensor for tensioning bar (4) out of convertible top frame (3).
