Constant Velocity Joint Boot: Service and Repair
33 21 071 Replacing both gaiters on left and right of output shaftSpecial tools required:
^ 21 2 120
^ 26 1 110
^ 33 2 130
Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove output shaft.
Note:
Clean output shaft.
Use rubber gaiter repair kit.
Replace inner gaiter: Press off sealing cap (1).
Release hose clip (2).
Press cap (3) off together with dust cover.
Remove circlip (4).
Use special tool 26 1 110 in accordance with diameter of output shaft.
Bearing inner race must rest on rib of special tool.
Press splined shaft out of constant velocity joint.
In event of hollow shaft, also use special tool 212 120.
Remove gaiter.
Important:
Do not disassemble joint.
Check joint for contamination or damage.
Note:
If constant velocity joint has to be disassembled: Mark positions of ball hub, ball cage and joint with respect to each other with electric inscriber.
Ensure all parts are clean prior to assembly.
Replace outer gaiter:
Unfasten hose clips (5) and (6).
Pull dust cover off over the splined shaft.
Clean constant velocity joint while it is assembled and remove all traces of old grease.
Introduce new grease (contained in repair kit) in joint.
Mount the transmission end dust cover.
Remove adhesive tape.
Coat sealing surface of cap (3) with sealing gel, refer to BMW Parts Service, and press with a thrust ring onto constant velocity joint.
Pull new dust cover on.
Mount special tool 33 2130.
Press constant velocity joint and cap (3) over inner bearing race on splined shaft.
Install new circlip.
Fill joint with grease.
Pull dust cover onto cap (3).
Fit new hose clips.
Important: Fastener of large hose clamp must be located between two bore holes of constant velocity joint.
Coat sealing surfaces of sealing cap with sealing gel, refer to BMW Parts Service.
Press on sealing cap with a thrust ring
