Removing And Installing Or Replacing Steering Spindle Lower Section

Caution:
There will no longer be an end stop once the steering spindle has been separated from the steering gear. The steering wheel can be turned without restriction.
In order to avoid damaging contact ring in steering column stalk:
Move steering wheel to straight-ahead position and remove ignition key.





Remove upper clamping screw on clamp.
Move steering wheel to straight-ahead position.
Remove ignition key in this position.
Pull steering spindle out of clamp.

Installation:
- Move steering gear to straight-ahead position - markings on cap and on housing must line up.
- Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw





Unfasten screws.
Disconnect gong plug and On-Board Diagnosis socket and remove trim.





Remove trim for pedal assembly.





Unfasten nut.
Remove screw and detach lower section of steering spindle.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw





Release screws and press heating valves to one side.





Release screw.
Detach double joint.
Pull steering spindle inwards out of bulkhead.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw
