Removing And Installing/replacing Left Or Right Head Airbag In Rear Compartment (version With Panorama Glass Sunroof)

WARNING:
Read and comply with safety regulations for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical belt tensioners.
Incorrect handling can activate airbag and cause injury.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery negative lead
- Follow instructions for unlocking and locking airbag plug connections.
- Remove roofliner

Installation overview, head airbag in rear compartment:







1. Gas generator
2. Gas lance
3. Rear-compartment head airbag







Unlock and disconnect plug connection (1) for rear compartment head airbag gas generator.







Release screw (1) on rear-compartment head airbag gas generator at roof cross-member.







Release screws of rear-compartment head airbag.
Remove gas generator with rear-compartment head airbag.







Secure gas generator with screw (1) only.







Secure rear-compartment head airbag with screws only.







Lay retaining strap on anchor fitting of ITS head airbag (1) under retaining ribs (3) of rear-compartment head airbag (2).







Retaining strap on anchor fitting of ITS head airbag (1) is situated under retaining ribs (2) of rear-compartment head airbag.







Place retaining strap on anchor fitting of ITS head airbag (1) under fabric of rear-compartment head airbag (2).







Tighten down screws of rear-compartment head airbag.
Tightening torque.

E53
Metal screw 3 Nm







View after screw connection of rear-compartment head airbag:
Retaining strap on anchor fitting of ITS head airbag (1) is situated under retaining ribs (2) of rear-compartment head airbag.







Tighten down screws on rear-compartment head airbag gas generator at roof cross-member.
Tightening torque.
18AZ Gas generator, head airbag in rear compartment, to body
E53
M6 4 Nm







Reconnect and lock plug connection for rear-compartment head airbag gas generator.
