SUBJECT
Service Action: Conversion of the Mechanical Alternator Belt Tensioner to a Hydraulic Version
MODEL
E53 X5 with the M54 Engine produced from 9/26/2003 through 10/3/2003.
SITUATION
Some X5 customers may experience excessive drive belt noise during engine operation. If left unattended, this could lead to premature belt wear requiring belt replacement. The root cause of this problem has been identified as a defective mechanical alternator belt tensioner which applies an insufficient amount of pressure to the belt, resulting in belt slippage.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E53 X5 vehicles with M54 engines which were produced from 9/26/2003 through 10/3/2003.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action,
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Replace the mechanical alternator belt tensioner with the hydraulic version.
PROCEDURE
Perform preliminary alternator drive belt replacement steps as outlined in TIS repair instructions 11 28 010.
Relieve tension on the drive belt by rotating tensioner (1) in a clockwise direction. Remove alternator drive belt (2).
Remove bolt (2) and upper deflection pulley (1) and put aside.
Remove upper and lower mechanical belt tensioner bolts (2) and remove tensioner assembly (1).
Assemble new tensioner components as shown. Install bolt 8 in position shown. Insert bolts 6 and 7 in preparation for installation on engine.
Install the assembly on the engine.
Note:
The hydraulic tensioner is held in place by 3 bolts. Upper bolt 6, lower bolt 7, and left side bolt 9.
Install tensioner pulley (4) taking care to position the mudguard (5) correctly. The dished portion faces to the front. Reinstall upper deflection pulley and install new belt in reverse of removal instructions.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 376. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-215) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 376 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
