Service Procedure

It is possible that a small number of vehicles flagged in DCS for this Service Action have already had a TCU installed at a VDC. Before commencing this Service Action, turn on the ignition, and check if the green LED on the mirror (E46), or green LED in the headliner (X3) illuminates. If the LED illuminates, the Service Action has already been completed and no further work is necessary.

Alternately, vehicles processed at the VDC February 9, 2004 and later have a campaign label installed. If there is a campaign label showing code number 391 (2), the campaign has already been completed and no further work is necessary.

In either case, please contact the Warranty Department by e-mail or fax, giving:

^ Your Dealer name

^ The vehicle VIN

^ And stating that a TCU was previously installed, and that campaign 00 84 23 01 00 should be closed out.

Your warranty administrator will arrange to remove the VIN from DCS.

1. Access the TCU location in the left luggage compartment by removing the trim. On convertibles the TCU location is on the left rear bulkhead, accessed via the trunk.

[NEW]2. Before installing the new TCU, remove from it one copy of the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) label and place a copy on the repair order for reference during warranty claim entry. You will be asked for the new TCU "ESN" when submitting a claim in DCS net.

[NEW]3. If a second ESN label is available on the new TCU, affix it over the existing label on the Owner's Manual insert (P/N 01 49 0 157 963).

4. Install the new TCU and code it with DIS CD36.1 or higher (E46) or CIP 10.1 or higher (E83).

5. Remove the temporary label over the SOS button (as necessary), and reinstall any removed vehicle trim.

6. NOTE:
In order that the TCU replacement is properly recorded, FASTA must be activated in the DISPlus/GT1. For details on activating FASTA, refer to SI B07 07 01.

Using DISPlus/GT1, select "Diagnosis" and delete any stored fault codes.

7. Test the BMW Assist service for proper operation by placing a test call using the SOS button.

Note:
The MEL button on the steering wheel must not be used.
