SUBJECT
Seat Belt Chime Continues to Sound

MODEL
E60 (5 Series)

SITUATION
The customer complains that the seat belt warning chime continues to sound. The condition occurs:

^ When the driver's seat is occupied and the driver's seat belt is not fastened (the front passenger seat is not occupied).

^ When the driver's seat and the front passenger seat are occupied and at least one of the front seat belts is not fastened.

Note:
Depending on weight or the weight distribution, the passenger seat may sense that it is occupied if a bag or similar object is placed on the seat cushion.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The seat belt system is working as designed. BMW and other vehicle manufacturers are following a new government recommendation that this warning should continue to sound. The feature will be progressively introduced on other BMW models over time.

To avoid the possibility of the front seat incorrectly sensing that it is occupied, bags should be placed on the floor.
