SUBJECT
Buzzing, Humming or Growling Noises Coming from Inside the Fuel Tank
MODEL
E46 (3 Series) with the M56 engine from start of production to the present (SULEV vehicles only)
SITUATION
The customer complains that the vehicle exhibits a buzzing, humming or growling noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. Normally, the noise can be heard mainly when stopped in traffic or during the first start-up in the morning. The noise can also be heard at times while driving under a light load.
When diagnosed, the noise appears to be coming from the inside of the fuel tank and, in most cases, can only be duplicated when the fuel tank is at least half full.
CAUSE
The internal fuel tank pressure limiting valve tolerance is too narrow.
PROCEDURE
Replace the fuel tank in accordance with Repair Instruction RA 16 11 030.
Refer to SI B16 01 04 for fuel tank disposal procedures.
