July 2003
Service Engineering

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B36 02 03 dated May 2003. The Recall Number has been added.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
[NEW] Recall Campaign 03V-214: Checking Tire Bead

MODEL
E85 Z4

SITUATION
Some 18" front tires may have been damaged in the area of the bead during the mounting process. BMW is conducting a Recall Campaign to check the beads of both front tires on the affected vehicles, and replace any tires found to have been damaged.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall involves Z4 3.0 vehicles with 18" tires, which were produced from March 21 through April 2, 2003.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Range

Z4 3.0 LT22238 - LT22400

Z4 3.0A LU04451 - LU04567

If necessary, tires should be ordered from the BMW Tire Center at 1-866-4BMW-TIRE (1-866-426-9847) or via the Tire Center website link from DCSNet.

PROCEDURE
Check the front tires to see if they are Bridgestone Potenza FRT in size 225/40 R 18 88W. If any other brand or size of tire is on the vehicle, no further checking is required.

If the car is equipped with the affected tires, remove both front tires from the rims to check for damage. Carefully inspect the inside of both beads for tears in the rubber, as illustrated.

If any tears are found in the rubber, the tire must be replaced and returned to BMW NA. If no damage is found, the tire may be reinstalled.

Mount and balance both front tires.

After the tires have been reinstalled, initialize the Tire Pressure Monitoring system.

PARTS INFORMATION
This Recall Campaign will require one or two of the following part, only if a damaged tire is found.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 362 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-215) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 362 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previ6us Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign will be via Campaign Entry.
