Replacing Final Drive
33 10 010 Removing and installing or replacing rear differentialSpecial tools required:
^ 33 4 420
Note:
The right output flange has a larger radial play than the left output flange.
The cause of this is the axial play in the differential needed for operation.
Important: Use only approved rear differential oils.
After installation:
^ Replacement only: Add rear differential oil
^ Check rear differential oil level, correct if necessary
Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove emergency wheel pan
^ Replacement only: Drain rear differential oil.
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations
Support rear differential with workshop jack and special tool 33 4 420.
Important: Observe distance between special tool 33 4 420 and dust protection sleeve (1). To avoid grinding noises, make sure the dust protection sleeve (1) is not damaged (e.g. bent).
Remove tension strut.
Remove propeller shaft from rear differential.
Remove output shaft on left and right from rear differential.
Unfasten nut.
Remove screw to center of vehicle.
Release screws (1).
Slowly lower workshop jack and tip rear differential out towards rear.
Important: Adhere to the following note on installation in order to prevent distortion of the rear differential during installation and thereby avoid potential complaints about noise.
Installation
Install rear differential with workshop jack and special tool 33 4 420.
Insert screws (1) (do not tighten down).
Insert screw (2) and screw on nut (3) (do not tighten down).
Remove workshop jack.
Tighten down screws (1).
1AZ Final drive to rear axle carrier
Front 100 Nm
Rear 165 Nm
Tighten nut (3).
