Replacing Output Flange Radial Seal
Note: After completion of work, change gear oil.
Caution:
Use only the approved gear oil in this manual transmission.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the transmission.
Remove complete exhaust system.
E46 / S54
Remove catalytic converter and intermediate pipes.
Remove heat shield (1).
Remove heat shield on left and right.
Unclip cable for oxygen sensors and reversing light switch on cross-member.
Unflange propeller shaft from transmission and tie back to one side.
Support transmission with a workshop hoist.
Release screws and remove cross-member.
Lever out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver.
Installation:
Drive in retaining plate (1) with special tool 23 2 470.
Grip output flange with special tool 23 0 020 and release collar nut (1) with special tool 23 2 320.
Installation:
Coat thread (1) with Loctite 243 thread locking compound.
Coat sealing surface (2) with Loctite 518 sealing compound.
Remove shims.
Note: If a new output flange is installed, you must recalculate the shims.
Pull off output flange with a commercially available puller.
Note: If output flange shows traces of heavy wear, install a new output flange and recalculate shims.
Installation:
Coat sealing lips of radial seal, sealing surface of output flange an spline shaft with gear oil.
Press on output flange with special tool 23 3 010 and tighten down to tightening torque 200 Nm.
Grip output flange with special tool 23 0 020.
Installation:
Screw special tool 23 3 012 onto output shaft.
Pull out radial seal with special tool 00 5 010.
Installation:
Drive in radial seal as far as it will go with special tool 232480.
Note: To drive in: use a plastic hammer.
