SUBJECT
Trunk Lid Fails to Latch
MODEL
[NEW] E46 (3 Series) Convertible from 1/03 - 5/03 production
SITUATION
Some owners of E46 Convertibles may complain that their trunk lid doesn't latch when it is closed. The complaint can only be duplicated if the trunk is opened with the remote.
CAUSE
When the trunk is released with the remote, the actuator operates for a very short period of time, so that the rotary catch doesn't complete its full range of travel. The catch travels far enough for the trunk to open, but since it is not at the end stop, it doesn't move in the closing direction when the lid is shut.
CORRECTION
In case of a customer complaint, replace the two trunk lid bump stops with part number 51 24 8 137 994. These improved bump stops are spring loaded so that when the trunk lid is released, the lid pops up higher, thereby rotating the latch to its end stop.
PROCEDURE
Refer to Repair Instructions 41 62 014.
