Shift Lever Assembly

Remove Shift Lever





Note: Do not turn knob when removing; otherwise turning lock in knob will be shorn off.

Detach knob with a forceful tug.

Installation:
Fit knob on selector lever, align and press on until it can be felt to snap into place.





Installation:
Push rubber gaiter (1) downwards until groove (2) is fully exposed.





Compress installation frame of rubber gaiter a little.

Remove rubber gaiter from center console.





Installation:
Fold rubber gaiter (1) downwards and fit on selector lever (2).
Pull rubber gaiter (1) over selector lever and insert in center console.





Remove acoustic insulation (1).

Remove exhaust system.

Remove underbody protection at rear and in center.

Remove right heat shield from front axle support.





Remove heat shield (1).





Release screws.


Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
When tightening screws down:
Grip each screw and tighten down nut. This prevents the flexible disk from being subjected to torsion stress.





Caution: Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints.

Joints and rubber sleeve can be damaged on constant-velocity joint.





Grip propeller shaft and release nuts.
Tightening torque, refer to Center mount = 21 Nm.

Bend propeller shaft downwards at center mount (1).

Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and tie back to side on vehicle underbody.

Support transmission with a hydraulic lifter.





Caution: Release only the 4 screws on cardan tunnel.

Cross-member remains bolted to transfer case.

Release screws on cross-member and lower transmission unit.






Lever out retainer (1).

Remove washer (2).

Withdraw selector rod (3).

Installation:

Grease selector rod pin.
Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.





Insert special tool 25 1 100 in mounting.

Turn special tool 25 1 100 90 0 counterclockwise.

Press mounting upwards out of selector arm.





Pull rubber gaiter out of body aperture and remove with selector lever.





Installation:
Pull inner rubber gaiter over pot on selector arm.
Button rubber gaiter into body aperture.





Installation:
Insert rubber gaiter with arrow in direction of travel towards front.





Installation:
Press mounting in area of retaining lugs into selector arm until mounting audibly snaps into place.





Installation:
Grease selector rod ball.
Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.

Install selector lever in selector arm.

Aligning mounting:
^ Arrows on mount in longitudinal axis of vehicle.
^ Retaining lugs of mount, transverse to direction of travel.
