Replacing Rear Window
Removing and Installing Rear Window (Sedan, Coupe)
NOTE:
When cementing the rear window, cements for cold and hot processing are permitted.
Remove and installing trim for rear roof pillar (C pillar),
Cold processing:
Comply with instructions on cementing windows,
`
Hot processing:
Open rear end of aluminium membrane in cartridge before installing in cartridge oven.
Heat cement cartridges to 80 °C for one hour in oven (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Comply with instructions on cementing windows,
NOTE: Cover rear side panels with protective covers.
Rear window cementing survey
Rear Window Cementing Survey:
Disconnect plugs on left and right sides.
Open trunk lid approx. 50 cm and secure in this position (e.g. insert welding rod between lock and locking spigot).
Pull out seals (1) and (2).
Mask edges of trunk lid and all round body with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).

4. Fabric adhesive tape
Fit long knife (36 mm blade length, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service) to tool.
NOTE: If necessary, resharpen knife with machine running.
Insert knife carefully between body and rear window glass.
Guide web of knife parallel to rear window.
CAUTION!
When reusing the rear window:
Avoid damaging lines for rear window heating/antenna.
Cut through cement bead all around as close as possible to the rear window glass.

Lift out rear window with special tool 51 3 010.
Cut off old cement in body opening to a thickness of approx. 0.5 mm.
Cut off old cement carefully with an universal knife (sharp as a razor blade) to avoid damaging the paint finish in body opening.
Pull off adhesive tapes all round.
CAUTION!
To provide long-term corrosion inhibition, damage to paintwork (scratches and large areas of damage) should always be touched up,
When reusing the rear window:
Scrape away cement residue on rear window to depth of 0.5 mm with scraper (Sourcing Reference; BMW Parts Service).
Mount and press seal on to rear window glass at bottom.
Mount and press seal on to rear window glass at top and sides.
CAUTION!
The basic filler must have hardened!
Cover roof liner at roof edge (1) with adhesive tape for painting.
Treat rear window and body beside cemented area with BMW - approved materials (repair kit, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service),
NOTE: Note specified ventilation time.
Cut nozzle to size.
(A) = 6...8 mm
(B) = 10... 11 mm
NOTE: To apply a uniform cement bead, use cartridge pistol (operated by compressed air or electrically-powered, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Check expiry date of cement!
If applicable, produce a sample bead before cementing.
Cartridge must be arranged vertically against rear window.
CAUTION!
Version with rear window antenna:
No cement must be applied to contacts on rear window heating/antenna.
Shape of cement bead:
(A) = 6...8 mm
(B) = 10...11 mm
CAUTION!
Apply cement bead quickly and insert window. Skin formation time of cement maximum 10 minutes.
Maintain uniform distance (A) between cement bead and gasket.
Distance (A) = 3 mm
Install rear window carefully using special tool 51 3 010. Seal must fit uniformly on the sides. Push up rear window glass until seal bears uniformly on the roof flange.
Align rear window to roof flange (A) and sides (B) uniformly using special tool 51 3 032. Press-fit rear window and secure in this position with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).
Length: 300 mm
Width: 50 mm
CAUTION!
Remove dirt caused by cement residue with Sika Entferner 208 (Sourcing Reference; BMW Parts Service) before hardening. Do not press out rear window glass again for this purpose. Hardened cement can only be removed by machine.
Assemble car.
After the hardening time, remove adhesive tapes.
NOTE: Leaks can be found by spraying water on the sealing lips or with an ultrasonic leak detector (refer to BMW Parts Service) and then eliminated by using a suitable nozzle.
