SUBJECT
Wiper Arm Adjustment Procedure

MODEL
X5

SITUATION
The wiper arm adjustment can be changed by application of excessive force, such as that which can be encountered when knocking ice accumulation off the blades by slapping the wipers against the windshield, or by car wash pads catching the wipers.

If the wiper arms are not correctly adjusted, complaints of wiper noise or incomplete wiping may be encountered.

The procedure described in the Repair Manual, section 61 61 010 has been modified slightly to improve the wiping characteristics of the X5.

Note:
If special tools 009 221/222 have not been received yet, padded locking jaw pliers may be substituted. Use caution not to mar the finish of the arm.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, check the adjustment of the wiper arms, and make modifications as necessary. Replacing the wiper blades may not be necessary and will not resolve the complaint if the wiper arms are not properly adjusted.

PROCEDURE
Park the wipers at approximately midway up the windshield.

Check to see if the left wiper arm contacts the wiper blade assembly in the area indicated. If it does, the wiper arm angle must be corrected to prevent the upper end of the blade from lifting away from the windshield during operation.

Remove the blade from the arm and check the angle of the arm. The correct angle is approximately 9.

The angle can be checked by fabricating a cardboard or plastic template (1) from the sample as shown.

If the angle is less than approximately 9, set the angle using special tools 009 221/222.

Once the arm angle has been set, reinstall the blade and check the approach angle with special tool 009 331.

Adjust the arm using special tools 009 221/222.

On vehicles produced prior to 4/01, check the plastic blade guide to determine if either leg touches the windshield during operation. If there is contact, shorten the leg by cutting off no more than 2 mm of material.
