SUBJECT:
Installing the Transmission Cooler Line Clip

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 24 50 99, dated December 1999 which was faxed to all BMW SAV centers.

MODEL:
E53 X5 SAV

Situation:
The clip securing the flexible transmission lines (from the transmission to the cooler) may not adequately hold the hoses in place.

Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action involves X5 vehicles produced from 9/1/99 - 12/03/99.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
Remove the original clip (if equipped) and replace it with a revised clip.
Procedure:
To replace the transmission line clip:





1. Remove the lower front splash pan (black plastic).





2. Install the revised clip, P/N 17 22 1 719 407, onto the flexible transmission lines as described below:

3. Remove the original clip securing the transmission lines (if equipped).





4. Install the revised clip (1), p/n 17 22 1 719 407, onto the transmission lines. The clip must be installed in the center of the hoses as illustrated.

Note:
The original clip may not be attached to all affected vehicles. If the clip is not attached, install the revised clip as described.

5. When the clip is completely installed, make sure the transmission lines have clearance around the A/C compressor, engine block, and other body components.





The "barb" on the new clip (1) does not get attached.

Label Instructions

This Service Action has been assigned code number 262. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1)

b. punch out code number 262 printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
