PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 00V-261 Checking Torque of Safety Belt Bolts

Model
X5 E53

SITUATION

This recall involves the safety belt lower outboard anchorage bolt on the driver's and front passenger's seats of affected vehicles. It is possible that, during the vehicle production process in the assembly plant, one or both bolts may not have been fully tightened. In this case, the safety belt system might not be able to provide its maximum restraint function in a severe crash.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This recall involves X5 vehicles which were produced from June 2000 through July 2000.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

This recall involves loosening and retightening both front safety belt bolts to the proper torque.

PROCEDURE

This procedure must be performed on both front seats.

Raise the seats to their highest position to provide access to the outboard lower belt attaching bolts.

Loosen the bolt approximately one - quarter turn, and retighten to 45 Nm.

INSTRUCTIONS

This recall campaign has been assigned code number 284 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 284 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
