SUBJECT:
Repair Technique for Rear Cupholder
MODEL:
X5
SITUATION:
If the rear cupholder is hit from the side when open, is pulled out past its endpoint, or is forcibly pulled open, the insert in the cupholder assembly can get out of alignment. When the insert is not properly aligned, the cupholder may not stay closed, or it may not open when pushed.
Although there are no broken parts, previous attempts to reinstall the insert and to realign it with the cassette have not been successful, which required replacement of the cupholder assembly. A procedure has been developed to repair assemblies that are simply out of alignment, and have no broken parts.
PROCEDURE:
In case of a customer complaint, remove the insert from the assembly by firmly pulling straight back on the insert until it pops out of the cassette.
Cut or file off the last two teeth from both racks on the insert.
Using both hands, place the racks of the insert into the cassette while holding the cassette out with your thumbs and forefingers, and push the insert in firmly with the heels of your hands. Make sure that both sides are pushed in evenly so that the insert is properly aligned.
Check for proper operation. If the insert is not properly aligned it can be removed and reinserted until proper operation is achieved.
